Black spiny-tailed iguana in a beam of sunlight, Costa Rica
A black spiny-tailed iguana on a rock in Costa Rica, head lifted into the one patch of sunlight in a dark green forest. Everything around the iguana falls away into shadow, so your eye goes straight to the orange glow around the eye and the fine detail in the scales.
About this photo
Black spiny-tailed iguanas are common in Central America, and you'll often find them basking on rocks and walls to warm up in the morning sun. This one stopped on a mossy boulder right where a beam of light broke through the trees. The rest of the scene stayed dark, which gives the image its calm, spotlit look.
Why it works on a wall
This is a dark, atmospheric print with a single bright focal point. Deep greens, warm browns and a touch of orange sit well on a wall with a deeper color, or in a room with warm lighting. It suits a living room, study, bar or hotel lobby, where a darker, quieter image gives the space depth.
