Erwin's photography started in a darkroom, long before digital. That's where the eye for black and white really formed — not about missing colour, but about what's left once you take it away: shape, contrast, the weight of a shadow. Every black and white print here started as a colour photograph, then was reworked until only the essential remained.
Black and white in a modern living room
Black and white photography adds contrast to a modern living room without competing with your colours. Above a sofa, choose a print about two thirds to three quarters as wide as the sofa. For a living room that is often 120 to 150 cm wide, and I can print larger or smaller to match your wall. Hang it with the centre at about 145 cm from the floor. For a sleek, contemporary look, choose aluminium or acrylic glass. For a warmer feel, choose canvas or a framed print in black, white or natural oak.
Personally, I have a black and white print of my own in a thin black frame, and I find it very beautiful. A good rule is to choose a print about two thirds the width of the sofa. For a standard three-seater of around 210 cm, that means a print of roughly 140 cm wide. Black and white images can go a size bigger than colour without overwhelming a room, because they don't compete with your furniture or textiles.

Start with the wall. Above a sofa, a print of about two thirds of its width gives a calm, balanced look. For a gallery feel, 60 × 90 cm works well alone or in a group. For one statement piece on an empty wall, go to 100 × 150 cm or bigger: it anchors the room the way a window would. Tape paper at the real size on your wall first. It shows right away whether the print is too small or takes over the room.
My own starting point is different, and it comes from years of working with colour and with interior designers and architects. I do not start with centimetres. I start with the colour of the wall and the light in the room, and with what you want the room to feel like. A dark print on a dark wall can look almost like a window, and a large format turns a wall into the centrepiece of the room. A smaller print keeps the room quiet. I also like to leave the beaten path, as I did at Pure & Original. In one mockup of the lion from my AI art series Wild Souls, a very large dark print hangs on a black wall in a kitchen. It breaks the rules above, and it works.

Without colour, what is left is light, shape and texture. That makes a black and white print calm: it adds depth to a room without competing with your walls, furniture or floor, so it fits almost any palette. It is also very graphic. Contrast and line come through strongly, especially at larger sizes, which is why a single large print can anchor a room. And it does not follow trends, so it keeps working as your interior changes. The ones that look straight at you. My elephant portraits, shot close against a dark background, hold a wall without any help from colour. My own rule: to make a real statement, print big, and then bigger than you think. Think 100 cm as a start, and in a large room or lobby even several metres wide. Aluminium or acrylic glass gives a sharp, contemporary finish. For a quieter wall, Elephant Mother and Calf is the softer choice.
