Crown of the dunes: fallow deer wall art from the Netherlands

At the edge of the forest in the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes, a fallow deer lies resting among the pine needles. He looks straight at you, calm and alert, while his broad, palmate antlers open above his head like a crown. The soft green backdrop of branches and leaves keeps all the attention on the animal itself: his gaze, his ears and those remarkable antlers.

I photographed this buck in October, during the rut, when the males carry their antlers at their finest. The Water Supply Dunes, just outside Amsterdam, are home to one of the largest wild herds of fallow deer in the Netherlands. The warm autumn light and the dark forest give the image a quiet, almost painterly mood: a portrait of a wild animal, close to home.

The portrait format and the calm, natural tones make this print work well in a hallway, bedroom or study, or above a sideboard. It pairs with wood, linen, greens, warm earth tones and black, in rural, Scandinavian or classic-modern interiors, and brings a piece of nature into an office, practice or holiday home.

Available as a wildlife photo print in several sizes and materials, shipped to Europe and 30 other countries.
