Photographed at Beekse Bergen in 2024. This silverback had positioned himself against a door, seemingly hiding from the rest of the group — a quiet, deliberate retreat from the others. For a moment he looked up, and our eyes met just long enough for the shutter to fire.
Converted to black and white afterward, a choice made to strip away distraction and let the weight of that gaze carry the image. Color would have softened it; without it, the texture of the skin and the intensity in the eyes do all the work.
